20 Tips from a Head Gardener - Pip Smith

I’m a Landscape Designer with over 13 years experience working as a professional horticulturist. Trained to degree level in horticulture at Pershore College, I have achieved an MA in Landscape Architecture with distinction, from Birmingham City University. I’ve held the post of Head Gardener at several private and public gardens, most recently at the highly acclaimed Wollerton Old Hall in Shropshire. Now a Pre-Registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers, I’m using my previous knowledge and experience to create imaginative, sympathetic and long lasting designs.

Taking inspiration from the natural world, I enjoy mixing the old and new. Design should consider and embrace the challenges we all face. For a green space to be successful it must connect with the user and wider landscape, allowing room to grow and mature.

I love the landscape’s hidden attributes, its ability to soothe, restore, provide comfort, solace and reflection, all key elements to design.
